John Terry’s Aston Villa future is a step closer to being decided.

At the age of 37, John Terry has been written off more than once. As is the case with any ageing defender, he has been deemed ‘past it’ at the sight of any small mistake, especially in his final days as a Chelsea player. Now, however, many Aston Villa fans are clamouring to see him remain at the club for another season and, if they gain promotion to the Premier League, that could well happen.

As reported by the Birmingham Mail, it seems as if Terry is intent on remaining at Villa Park as they continue their push for promotion to the top flight, which would obviously involve a trip back to Stamford Bridge.

It is a huge piece of news for Steve Bruce’s side and, moving forward, keeping hold of Terry could be crucial if their Premier League dreams come true. Obviously, there is the experience factor to take into consideration after his many years playing at the top, but above that, Terry can be used in many different ways.

It is no secret that he has taken Jack Grealish under his wing since joining the club, and if the youngster’s performances on the pitch are anything to go by, Terry been able to successfully steer him in the right direction. If the centre-back can continue that influence on some of the club’s brightest young stars, then Villa could benefit for years to come.

Plus, in terms of name value,Terry is an extremely recognisable face for a club attempting to rebuild their stature among England’s elite. Some might not see that as an important factor but, in the current era of modern football, it is important to have a stable brand and having someone like Terry on the books brings more attention to the club – whether that is in the Premier League or the Championship.

Also, he is not even close to being ‘over the hill’ yet. Villa fans are clearly excited at the prospect of the veteran staying at the club, and you can bet it is not for the reasons listed above. They want to see results on the pitch and Terry produces that, with his leadership, timing and ability to read the ball all being key attributes.
