Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld has been in the limelight for a few months now.

For weeks now there has been a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the future of Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld, with injury issues and transfer rumours plaguing the 29-year-old’s season.

It is a given with any high profile star in the Premier League who is performing well, but his recent injury means that Alderweireld has not been able to keep assisting his Spurs teammates on the pitch. As reported by Football.London, however, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez believe things may be looking up for the former Southampton man.

“His state of mind is great. Obviously we need to see him on a pitch as well but in training and every way he is around the place is a real good influence for everyone.” said Martinez.

Roberto Martinez looks on during the Premier League match between Burnley and Newcastle United at Turf Moor on October 30, 2017 in Burnley, England.

“He’s had a big smile on his face. He’s a very positive person in his nature. I think he’s recovered extremely well, we’ve got all the information and we just looking forward to seeing if we can get him involved in the Tuesday game and allow him the time to heal and to get him back into his normal self.”

Usually, players see the international break as nothing more than an unwanted distraction, which is why so many of them pull out with supposed ‘injuries’ if they are not interested in engaging with meaningless friendlies. Alas, when it comes to Alderweireld, the Belgian seems to be thriving in the atmosphere created with the national team.

Toby Alderweireld of Spura arrives prior to The Emirates FA Cup Quarter Final match between Swansea City and Tottenham Hotspur at Liberty Stadium on March 17, 2018 in Swansea, Wales.

This current crop of players have long since been called the golden generation over in Belgium, and while they have not quite been able to live up to that reputation as yet, they still seem to possess a great core mentality within the squad.

There is undoubtedly a great amount of stress on the defender’s shoulders right now what with Spurs fighting for a place in the top four and clubs from around Europe showing interest in acquiring his services, so perhaps this is exactly what he needed.

Alderweireld will be hoping to feature in some form against Chelsea this weekend as Tottenham return to Premier League action.
