Nathan Blake tips Wolves to finish fourth this season

Ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Nathan Blake has some interesting views regarding the Championship promotion race this season.

The majority of former Wolverhampton Wanderers players have only had positive things to say about the club’s sensational form this season, but ex-striker Nathan Blake has a different viewpoint.

Old school Wolves fans will likely remember Blake’s tenure at the club from 2001-2004, during which time he scored some vital goals including one of the three in the 2003 play-off final, which secured the Midlands side’s promotion back to the Premier League. As reported by Wales Online, though, he is not overly confident that things will be any easier this time around

“My old club have been rampaging away at the top for most of the season – and playing some lovely football whilst doing that,” he said. “Wednesday night’s win over Leeds took their lead at the top back up to six points, but even that is still way down on what it was.

“I’ve been through that experience myself as a player, ironically in Wolves colours during the 2001-02 season. We were rampaging away at the top most of the season, but suddenly hit a brick wall at the beginning of March.”

While there is validity to what Blake is saying, his remarks become all the more interesting when you see the order in which he thinks the top six will end up come the end of the season – Cardiff City, Fulham, Aston Villa, Wolves, Derby, Middlesbrough.

It is certainly possible that these events could transpire, but when you discover Blake was born and raised in Cardiff and began his senior career there, it becomes a little bit more questionable. There has definitely been a momentum shift over the last few weeks and it has been clear for everyone to see, but it just feels like Wolves’ 3-0 victory over Leeds was more important than he is making it out to be.

There is no doubt that dropping into fourth would be a disaster for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men and, whichever way you look at these comments, tomorrow evening’s game against Aston Villa is going give us a huge indicator as to whether or not the race for the top two will go down to the wire.
