Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has been thrust into the spotlight once again.

Emre Can of Liverpool celebrates scoring his side's first goal during the Premier League match between Liverpool and West Ham United at Anfield on February 24, 2018 in Liverpool, England.

The Emre Can saga continues to develop with each passing day, with the German’s recent comments during an interview raising some eyebrows regarding where his footballing future may lie.

Can has been a member of the Liverpool family since signing back in 2014, and through the last four years, he has been able to grow substantially as a player to the point where he is now considered to be an integral part of the first team. As reported by Sport 1, however, a few simple sentences have caused a commotion on Merseyside as the speculation regarding his next move continues.

“I want to become a world-class player,” Can told Sport 1.

“Maybe once in the world team of the year. That would be great.”

More often than not, after spending a good portion of your career at one club, you tend to get a feel for whether it is where you belong. When it comes to these remarks, regardless of how insignificant they may seem, the fact that Can does not believe he is already at the level suggests he may need to change some things up in his own mind in order to achieve his personal and professional goals.

Given his style of play, it is easy to forget Can is just 24 years of age, which is an important factor to consider here. He has not even reached the outskirts of his prime as a central midfielder yet, and he is already exceptionally strong on the ball, calm under pressure, and can transition from being a forward-thinking midfielder to a defensive one in the blink of an eye.

History would suggest that he will indeed move on from Liverpool because the evidence is there to support that statement. For years the Reds have sold their high profile players on to Europe’s elite sides, and you can already see the scenario playing out before our very eyes.

Part of Can’s development took place as a member of the Bayern Munich youth setup, and it makes all the sense in the world for him to return as a seasoned midfielder with years of experience in English football.

It is not a given, but this may be the first step towards a departure for one of Anfield’s fondest stars.
