Wolverhampton Wanderers are in a strong position in the race for promotion, and now some attention is turning to the possibility of them breaking the all-time points record for the Championship.

The total has stood since the 2005/06 season when Reading secured promotion to the Premier League by quite literally dominating the entire division. Now, 12 years on, Wolves seem to be doing things that have never been seen in the second tier, although they still face an uphill battle to break the aforementioned record.

With 15 games remaining before the final whistle blows on this campaign, Wolves have accumulated 71 points from their first 31 outings since August. That means, in order to become the most successful Championship team ever, they must pick up 36 points from a possible 45 in what is considered to be one of the most competitive leagues in the world.

They have shown that kind of form for a while now, but all it takes is a look at the fixture list to see why this could prove to be challenging. In the next few weeks alone Wolves will take on Preston, Norwich City, Fulham, Reading themselves, Leeds United and Aston Villa.

In the current climate, Wolves will be favourites in every single game, but the away trips to Craven Cottage, Elland Road and Villa Park, in particular, could prove tricky.

Wolves toughest tests thereafter will come against Middlesbrough, Cardiff, Derby and Birmingham City, and the latter would love nothing more than to cut their promotion hopes at the knees. It is not impossible for them to win them all, but it is pretty unheard of at this stage of the season.

When you look at things in that way it seems unlikely that Wolves will manage this feat, although they have proved time and time again this season that they can often pull off the unthinkable.
