Birmingham manager Gary Rowett has commented on Clayton Donaldson’s international career after he was withdrawn from their squad due to injury.
It has been a frustrating few weeks for Clayton Donaldson who has had to sit by and watch as Birmingham City climb the table. The forward has been out for three games following an Achilles injury that he sustained in the game against Sheffield Wednesday, and now he has not been selected by Jamaica for their next game. As reported by Birmingham Mail, manager Gary Rowett applauded the decision to allow Donaldson time to recover from his injuries.
“We spoke to them last week and said ‘Obviously you have got to do what you have got to do as a federation but he has been struggling with an Achilles problem’,” Rowett said.
“We were a little bit concerned that even if he was to make some of these [international] games, going away travelling, coming back at some point, it is going to turn into a bigger problem. We were hopeful they wouldn’t include him.
“I think that will do him a little bit of good. We made the decision not to involve him against Blackburn to hopefully give him enough recovery time for the next game and be fully fit.”
Donaldson featured in the Copa America over the summer; however he will not be fit in time for the nation’s Caribbean Cup qualifier in Guyana.
The Blues will be hoping he can rest up to ensure he is fit and ready as the club attempt to continue their push for the play-offs.
Their next game comes against Nottingham Forest after the international break where they will aim to extend their unbeaten run in the league to eight matches.
