Bournemouth striker Benik Afobe confirmed his Wolves comeback in the final hours of the January transfer window.
As confirmed by the official Wolves Twitter account, 24-year-old striker Benik Afobe has successfully completed his return to Molineux on a season-long loan from Premier League side AFC Bournemouth.
This deal has been in the pipeline for the majority of the January window, with fans initially being led to believe that Afobe could come back to the club on a permanent basis. Alas, they will have to settle for a loan deal.
It was the Cherries who decided to revive the potential move after caving into Wolves’ demands at the eleventh hour, with the rumours alone being enough to send the Gold and Black faithful into a frenzy. Afobe completed his initial move to Bournemouth two years ago for a reported £10 million, but he has not quite been able to live up to that price tag over the last two seasons.
Just 11 goals in 70 appearances left him on the outside of the squad looking in and, given the current state of Wolves’ promotion push, it made all the sense in the world for him to head back up to the Midlands.
During his first stint, Afobe averaged almost one goal in two with an overall record of 23 goals in 48 appearances, with his departure signalling the end of the popular ‘Dicko, Afobe, Sako’ trio.
This time around there will be heavy expectations on his shoulders, with Wolves fans looking to him as a source of goals. Their desperation may come as a surprise to some given how far clear they are at the top of the Championship table, but they have been sorely lacking an out-and-out striker for quite some time now.
Afobe’s triumphant return to the hallowed Molineux turf will likely take place this Saturday when they host Sheffield United in a huge top of the table clash.
