Aston Villa defender John Terry has made his opinions known regarding the VAR system.

Aston Villa defender John Terry made his feelings known regarding the VAR system last night courtesy of an Instagram post.
The game in question was Tottenham Hotspur’s FA Cup replay against Rochdale, and while the result wound up being incredibly one-sided, the requirement of the virtual referee system ensured that the footballing world still had something to throw their arms in the air about.

“What a shambles VAR is. Take far to (sic) long. I can’t even watch this.” said Terry.
It is something that was probably playing on the minds of most football fans as they watched the game unfold, and to be honest, it makes sense. After all, this is something we are not used to in this sport, and when you have been playing at the highest level for as long as Terry has, it becomes even more clear why he is not a fan.
The free-flowing nature of football is something that has been gradually beaten down over the last few years, with the introduction of VAR being something that has furthered the complaints of many. Interestingly though, you do not often see nearly as many fans throw their arms up regarding how long a game is taking when it comes to how many fouls we see on a week-to-week basis these days.

In terms of John Terry, his complaints are completely fair when you consider what a tenured veteran he is, as this is quite a radical change to be introducing into the game. In reality, the protests of footballing personalities such as Terry could prove to be one of the biggest factors behind VAR not coming to fruition on a regular basis.
Whether or not that is fair is still up for debate, but it is well worth noting that the power of ‘name value’ in the game is still something that is present in 2018, and that could be considered a problem. After all, just look at how quickly the strict mentality of referee reactions to diving went away.
