Following an indifferent start to the Championship season, Villa are rumoured to be after one of the stars of the season so far.

As reported by Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa are supposedly interested in securing the services of Barnsley captain Conor Hourihane. The 25-year-old has been a revelation for the Yorkshire-based club, helping them into third after four wins in their first six games.

His two goals and three assists in August helped him pick up the Player of the Month award, as the Tykes brace themselves for a number of bids in the January transfer window. Whether or not he would thrive at Villa Park remains to be seen, and some believe it may do his development the world of good to stay at Oakwell and continue to ride the club’s momentum.

However, a transfer to the Midlands could be the perfect move for the Irishman. With Villa lacking that star quality in the middle of the park, Hourihane could bring a fresh burst of energy to the side. He will be carrying a great deal of confidence following his start to the season and if the Villans could convert the talent in their squad into a gelled unit, they would have a strong chance of a top six finish.

Hourihane’s best chance at playing in the top flight would be to make the move, and with the potential he possesses it would be a smart transfer for Villa.

Despite the attention he is receiving the midfielder will have to re-focus as Barnsley prepare to take on Wolves at Molineux tonight.
