Former Villa player Lee Hendrie believes Wolves can be caught

Ex-Aston Villa player Lee Hendrie has spoken about the title race, as Aston Villa attempt to catch Cardiff City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

As reported by Birmingham Live, former Aston Villa favourite Lee Hendrie has commented on the Championship title race in addition to the likelihood of Wolverhampton Wanderers being caught at the top of the table.

Hendrie was on the books at Villa Park for 13 years before his departure in 2007, and during that time he became quite the fan favourite among the club’s many supporters.

Now, though, he appears to be guiding Villa fans down a dangerous path by insisting that he believes their local rivals Wolves can be caught. Hendrie made his feelings known on Twitter by claiming that Wolves “can be (caught) with the fixtures they have left”.

While that is not exactly the most ridiculous statement in the world, given that Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have a string of difficult fixtures coming up, we have already been down this road. A few weeks back Villa fans were eager to let the old gold & black know they were coming for them but, within the space of a week, Steve Bruce’s side dropped points in back-to-back games.

The best thing Villa can do right now is get his players to not think about the likes of Cardiff, Wolves and Fulham around them because they are mere distractions.

When you are halfway through a crucial Championship game you do not want to be hearing about the scores from around the league. You want your manager to be telling you to be putting your foot on the gas, regardless of the scoreline. While Hendrie was likely just trying to hype the Villa faithful up for the next few months, it comes across like they are already considering themselves certainties for a place in the top two.

All Villa need to focus on is picking up maximum points from their final 12 league matches this season. If they take a second to look back or dwell on what else is happening around them, panic can start to set in as well as an added sense of pressure. Their biggest issue right now should be figuring out how to pick up six points against QPR and Sunderland.
