Celtic are the champions-elect over in Scotland, and that’s been obvious for quite some time.
Celtic are limping over the finish line towards yet another Scottish Premiership title, and understandably, many aren’t happy to see how Brendan Rodgers’ men are almost winning the championship by default.
They’ve certainly earned their place at the top of the table, but two 0-0 draws in their last three games, including their latest effort against Dundee, isn’t doing much to stir up excitement. As reported by BBC Sport, Celtic boss Rodgers seems adamant that his side wants to surge over the line as opposed to the title win being an inevitability.
“The finishing line is close, but we want to sprint over it, we don’t want to just jog over it,” Rodgers told BBC Sport.
“We want to get this league tied up as quickly as we can. But there’s still a lot of work to do. Six games, still a lot to play for. We’ll be better than what we were in the final third tonight, but lots of real positives – Craig Gordon coming back in, young Jack Hendry did well – it just wasn’t to be.”
Rodgers has often had moments throughout his career where he comes across as more of a politician, and this is one of them. While it’s all well and good to suggest that the team is still hungry to put their opponents in their place, the game against Dundee did nothing to prove that.
It felt like more of a pre-season outing than anything else, which simply shouldn’t be the case when you’re on the verge of an achievement like this. It exemplifies perfectly why so many fans choose to mock the Scottish top flight because there’s still no real competition for Celtic to deal with.
They’re 10 points clear of the chasing pack, and it’s obvious to see that they could probably tie up the league blindfolded at this stage. Without anyone to force them all the way, they’re happy to see out results prior to their Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers next weekend.
The fans deserve more than this, which isn’t something that should be said when you have as much domestic success as Celtic do.
