Analysing Wolves’ two potential FA Cup opponents

As Wolverhampton Wanderers prepare for the next round of the FA Cup, it is time to look at their potential opponents.

It is a rare occurrance for Wolves fans to be full of confidence regarding a cup competition. While they may have only picked up one win so far in England’s famous tournament, it was a big one against Premier League opposition in the form of Stoke City.

Now, with the fourth round draw having been made, the Midlands club know that their next opponents will either be Liverpool or Plymouth Argyle.

In reality, you could not have asked for two more different opponents. It would seem likely to many that the Reds will progress through, however as we learned from their original cup tie Jurgen Klopp could end up playing a weakened side. Either way, it is an exciting away day prospect regardless of whether Wolves will be heading up north or down south.

Liverpool

There is a long history between Wolves and Liverpool, with the Molineux-based club having toppled the Reds on a number of occasions including a 1-0 triumph back in December 2010. It is a chance for Lambert to show what kind of work he has been doing with squad on an even higher platform than the Championship, and a trip to Anfield is always special.

Wolves fans and players alike would likely be delighted if this was the tie they ended up with, because they would actually have a realistic chance of winning it.

As they proved at the Britannia Stadium, they have no fear when it comes to going straight at bigger sides and working their way up from the back. Be afraid, Jurgen.

Plymouth Argyle

While it may not be anywhere near as glamorous, a tie against Plymouth would be a fun opportunity for Wolves to test themselves against a lower league side. You never know what you are going to get in these kind of matches and given that if they make it through Plymouth will be full of confidence, you would have to imagine Wolves will put out a strong team in order to defeat them.

It would also prove to be something of a Sylvan Ebanks-Blake derby, with the forward having great success at both of these clubs. Given that they were in the same division less than a decade ago, the fight to make it into the fifth round will make this almost as appealing as the Anfield tie.
