Analysing Birmingham’s recent history of bad runs

Birmingham City are on a woeful run of form right now, and that has been a recurring theme throughout their recent history.

Birmingham City appeared to be a club on something of a rise a few weeks back and yet, over the course of a disastrous February period, they have wound up taking ten steps in the wrong direction.

The Blues are currently riding a five-game losing streak in all competitions, which came off the back of a great spell by Steve Cotterill’s men. Alas, consistency has been Birmingham’s problem ever since they dropped back into the Championship a few years back, as evidenced by their worst runs throughout the last few seasons.

2016/17 season

Just 12 months ago the Blues found themselves in yet another relegation battle towards the lower end of the second tier, with their most shocking run of form coming right when they needed it the least – towards the back end of the campaign.

Birmingham managed to win just one league game in 14 from January to April, and they were only kept up courtesy of adrenaline-driven victories in the final two matches of the season.

2015/16 season

Funnily enough, at least for opposition supporters, the Blues nearly replicated that ‘feat’ in the 2015/16 season, which is when they were actually challenging for the play-offs again. They were comfortably positioned in seventh when a run of just one victory in 12 ensured they would miss out and, yet again, the run began around late January/early February.

2014/15 season

For our final example we go back even further and, at this stage, we almost do not even need to tell you what happened. Birmingham went eight league games without a victory between January and February, all but confirming another year without any realistic promotion hopes.

For one reason or another the Blues seem to falter down the final stretch and, while fans will likely point to the fact they have managed to avoid the drop up until this point, that late flurry should not even be considered a consolation prize for them.

It is embarrassing for a team that was lifting the League Cup trophy just seven years ago, and Birmingham need to begin weeding out the deadwood so they can start to focus on the rebuilding process.
