A lot can change in the space of five years, and that could not be more true when it comes to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Five years ago Wolverhampton Wanderers were experiencing their third successive season back in the Premier League. That statistic alone should be cause for optimism, however after a positive start the club were in the middle of a five-game losing streak that would inevitably signal what was to come for the remainder of the campaign.

After their escape from relegation on the final day in the season prior, expectations were high around Molineux that the club could solidify their position in the top flight, but what transpired was one of the worst Premier League seasons in recent memory.

Perspective is a funny thing. When the club signed Roger Johnson and Jamie O’Hara in the summer transfer window, fans were jubilant at two players with talent and a great deal of potential were joining the club, but five years on we now know that they ended up letting Wolves down on more than one occasion.

Their contribution summed up a season of disappointment for the old gold and black, and looking back it is interesting to consider whether or not fans would go back to being in the position of a side who seemed destined for relegation.

The short answer is an overwhelming no. Despite the fact that five years ago today Wolverhampton Wanderers were a Premier League side, they were burdened with issues from top to bottom and the club was in a state of disarray. Today, even though they now reside in the Championship, the future is brighter than it has ever been with new owners, new players and a manager with passion for the first time in years.

It certainly is interesting to compare and contrast the two time periods, but for now it is safe to say that Wolves fans are happy that 2011 is just a distant memory.
