With Leeds United on the verge of another play-off run, it is time to look back at their last attempt to reach the Premier League.
To say Leeds United have been through it all over the years is an understatement. The Yorkshire based side have been searching for any form of salvation for a long time now and it appears as if their prayers have finally been answered in the form of Garry Monk.
Well, Monk and Chris Wood. Either way, Leeds are on their way towards a push for the Premier League for the first time since the 2005/06 season. Back then United finished fifth and found themselves three games away from the promised land and despite being underdogs, there was a certain confidence surrounding Elland Road.
After a 3-1 aggregate victory in the semi-final against Preston North End, it was Watford who they would meet at the Millennium Stadium for a place in the top flight. Unfortunately it would appear the game was a step too far for the club, with the Hornets running out 3-0 winners in a game that understandably knocked Leeds’ confidence.
Relegation to League One soon followed and it certainly begs the question: could it happen again? After all, a lot of similarities are being drawn to that season over a decade ago and the strength in this division is greater than ever.
Monk can learn plenty from looking back on the errors that were made in that game and the year that followed, and it is odd to think how much pressure the new manager is under. Given that this was not at all expected from the club, the man in charge should be given the chance to lead this team regardless of what happens in May.
