Everton Football Club are experiencing a strong start to their campaign, but what exactly has changed from five years ago?
Everton are one of the most decorated and well supported clubs in England. Their lineage goes back further than the majority of clubs in England, and they still hold the honour of having never been relegated from the Premier League. Under new manager Ronald Koeman there is a new sense of optimism around the club, and the same thing can be said of five years ago.
In September 2011, the club were preparing for another season in the Premier League without European football as manager David Moyes was at the back end of his time at Goodison Park. They would go on to finish a disappointing seventh in the league, in addition to securing a FA Cup semi-final appearance where they unfortunately lost 2-1 to rivals Liverpool at Wembley.
It is fair to say they fell below the expectations that they had set for themselves, with the club being stuck in a period of uncertainty as to what they believed they could actually achieve. If you fast forward to the present day, the next few years are expected to be extremely positive as they attempt to re-build themselves under Dutchman Koeman.
If offered the opportunity to go back to 2011 most fans would likely say no, as this new era shows signs of positivity for Everton with the goal of European football being within reach once again. Moyes certainly had some great times as manager of the club, but the supporters will always be clamouring for more.
