With the second city derby being less than a week away, it is time to take a look at the last three matches between local rivals Aston Villa and Birmingham City.

It is no secret that these two sides hate each other, with many fans considering this to be one of the fiercest rivalries in English football.

Either way, it will be an entertaining match this weekend, with both sides going into the clash under very different circumstances. Villa will attempt to push their way into the automatic promotion spots, meanwhile, the Blues are just trying to keep their heads above water.

The first meeting between the two sides this season did not really live up to the hype in terms of entertainment, although you cannot say it wasn’t tense. The Blues and Villa were in similar positions to where they find themselves in the present day, with both sides having golden opportunities to pinch all three points. Alas, it was not to be, with Villa being left to feel like it was a game they probably should have won.

It was a deserved triumph as the visitors did not really show much going forward, which tends to be the theme of these derbies as of late.

Birmingham City 1-1 Aston Villa

Birmingham’s last goal against their rivals came back in October 2016, when David Davis drilled in a vital equaliser which took the club to the brink of the top six – for the time being.

It was a goal that was desperately needed after hometown boy Gary Gardner gave Villa the lead in the first half, but all in all, the atmosphere created by the fans was much greater than the quality portrayed on the pitch.
