Liverpool’s transfer radar seems to have shifted from forwards back to goalkeepers.

After weeks of transfer rumours connecting Liverpool to high profile attacking names, the Reds have finally been linked to a type of player the first team desperately needs – a goalkeeper.
As reported by The Sun, Jurgen Klopp is interested in acquiring the services of 26-year-old Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno. The German superstar is said to be on the radar of a handful of clubs, with Arsenal leading the way, however, the appeal of a fellow countryman leading the way at Anfield could be enough to swing him towards Merseyside.

In the grand scheme of things, however, this is the kind of transfer Liverpool fans should be getting genuinely excited about. It is all well and good stacking your forward line with talent, but if there are hidden problems at the back which are being masked over, for the time being, they are always going to shine through no matter how many impressive goals you score.
As has been the case for a while now, the parallels between the Gunners and the Reds continue to develop, with both teams being in desperate need of a long-term solution in goal – although Liverpool’s situation seems to be a little bit more urgent.
There is no doubting that Loris Karius has shown noticeable improvements since breaking his way back into the starting line-up, but a lot of that can be attributed to the poise brought into the back four by Virgil van Dijk. Karius has been thriving on the momentum created by the squad’s overall success, but he just does not feel like the long-term answer and there is a reason why he has not been able to hold down his spot up until recently.

On the other hand, you have got Simon Mignolet who, at the age of 30, feels like a lost cause at this point. He is still capable of doing a job for a Premier League side, but not for a team like Liverpool who are attempting to break into Europe’s crop of the elite for the first time in years.
If all of these rumours are to be believed, then Klopp seems to be realising that the next stage of the rebuilding process begins with the number one slot.
