Liverpool are reportedly keeping an eye on the Manchester United left-back after Jose Mourinho’s criticism.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, history is against them when it comes to making a move for Manchester United’s Luke Shaw.

According to the Mirror, the Reds are keeping track of the full-back after he was recently criticised by Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese boss reportedly called out the left-back, and fellow defender Chris Smalling, for not playing through the pain barrier in the 3-1 win over Swansea City.

That has left both of the players’ camps reportedly unhappy and Liverpool are monitoring the situation with regards to the left-back.

Shaw would fill a big hole in their team, with James Milner currently occupying the left-back spot for the Reds.

Unfortunately for Jurgen Klopp’s team, history is against them if they decide to make a serious move.

Deals between United and Liverpool are virtually non-existent and no player has moved from Old Trafford to Anfield since Phil Chisnall, all the way back in 1964.

The last player to come close was Gabriel Heinze when he tried to force a move to Liverpool in 2007 after being ousted from the side by Patrice Evra. It did not happen and he joined Real Madrid.

That unsavoury episode showed how difficult deals between the old rivals truly are and that likely remains the case now.

Mourinho will not want to strengthen one of his Premier League rivals, he is simply too pragmatic to do so and that should put a quick end to any suggestions of Shaw being the first United player to move to Liverpool in 52 years.
