It wasn’t a very good Wednesday night for Liverpool, it must be said.

Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League champions won’t be setting a new record for points this season after Arsenal beat them 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium last night.

And it was two uncharacteristic errors from Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson which gifted the hosts both of their goals.

For the first, a loose back pass from Van Dijk was cut out by Alexandre Lacazette, who rounded Alisson and cancelled out Sadio Mane’s earlier opener, but the Brazil international then had a shocker of a pass himself.

It was Lacazette again who capitalised on a nonchalant ball from Alisson, before teeing up Reiss Nelson to score what proved to be the winning goal.

Goalkeeping errors are very rare for the former Roma stopper, and Matthew Upson noticed that Klopp was visibly stunned by the mistake.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Jurgen Klopp is standing there with his mouth open. He hasn’t said a word, his mouth is just wide open. I think he can’t believe what he’s been seeing.”

Liverpool are generally so reliable and when they do lose, the opposition generally has to work very hard.

But the Reds gifted the North Londoners their victory last night and no doubt Klopp will have addressed the sloppiness from Van Dijk and Alisson.
