“His feet are so fast”: Manager compares Liverpool prospect to £37m Manchester United player

Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has compared Manchester United wonderkid Amad Diallo to Liverpool gem Harvey Elliott.

The Ivory Coast international – who cost Manchester United £37.2m – is spending the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Sunderland, where he has done superbly well with six goals in 19 Championship appearances so far.

Now, Mowbray, who is overseeing the 20-year-old’s progress on Wearside, has made a claim involving Liverpool No.19 Harvey Elliott.

What’s the story?

Well, Mowbray hopes to see Erik ten Hag find a place for Amad in his lineup at Old Trafford, just like Jürgen Klopp has done with the 19-year-old Elliott at Anfield.

The Manchester Evening News quote the Sunderland boss as saying: “Hopefully, he can get an opportunity at United at some stage. I liken him very much talent wise to Harvey Elliot, the ball stuck to his feet, you know he’ll pick the right pass all the time, he knows when to keep it and when to release it.

“His feet are so fast, and Harvey is doing okay at Liverpool, so hopefully Amad will break through that glass ceiling at United, but it’s never easy for young players.”

Now, that reflects very well on the Ivorian, although it also speaks volumes about Elliott’s progress.

It must not be forgotten that the Liverpool midfielder is just 19 years of age, and is actually a year younger than Amad, so for Mowbray to use him as an example for the Sunderland loanee to look at says a lot.

Manchester United must copy Liverpool and give Amad a chance

In our view, Manchester United must look at Klopp giving Elliott opportunities and use that as inspiration to hand Amad a chance.

The rapid winger was already impressing under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shortly after his £37.2m move from Atalanta in January 2021, scoring against AC Milan in the Europa League Round of 16 back in March 2021.

However, opportunities sadly began to dry up for Amad.

Now, he is shining at Sunderland after a loan spell at Rangers last season, and if he can continue his form at the Stadium of Light, Ten Hag must give him a shot.
