Jose Mourinho has stated that Heung-Min Son being put up to answer questions in Wednesday’s pre-match press conference for Tottenham’s Europa League tie tomorrow doesn’t mean he will start.
Spurs take on Austrian side Wolfsberger in the first leg of their Round 32 showdown and, along with his manager, Son was the player put up to answer questions ahead of that game.
Usually, that signals the player in question will be starting in his side’s forthcoming game.
But Mourinho shared that Tottenham’s press officer ensured that’s not the case, as he hinted towards potentially benching the speedster because of the number of games they have played.
“One of the questions I asked to Simon (Tottenham press officer) is if the player (put up for questions for) the press conference has to be the player that starts the game? His answer was no.
“It can go both ways. He can play and he can be on the bench. The team we are going to play is going to be the strongest team I can pick for the game.
“Last week, as you know, we played two matches in a very short space.”
This is Mourinho and he doesn’t mess about when it comes to putting trophies in the cabinet.
So, it won’t be a surprise to see Son, Harry Kane, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele, all starting even though Spurs could afford to rest some of those given the level of opponent they are coming up against.
But then again, with things not exactly rosy in Tottenham’s Premier League kitchen, the fans need as much hope as possible that a trophy will be delivered at the end of the season and the Europa League is another chance to keep those hopes up.
