Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to react after finding out that Newcastle had moved to sign Chris Wood, after triggering his release clause.

What’s the story?

Well, Lineker seemed baffled by this update coming from Newcastle.

Sky Sports believe the Magpies have met Wood’s release clause which is said to be somewhere in the region of £20m, leaving Lineker stunned.

The BBC Match of the Day host posted a tweet expressing his shock at the fee, before elaborating in the comments section.

Lineker feels the imminent deal is “hilarious” and claimed that the signing of Wood is “poor recruitment” from Newcastle.

You can see the 61-year-old’s tweets in full below.

According to Sky Sports, Wood will undergo a medical at Newcastle today, while personal terms will also be thrashed out.

Is Chris Wood a smart signing by Newcastle?

In our view, there are many better ways in which £20m can be spent.

Wood is 30 years of age, so he won’t have much sell-on value, while he’s also scored just three Premier League goals this season.

It’s a panic signing in every sense. Eddie Howe needs a new striker to arrive at St James’ Park as soon as possible with Callum Wilson out for two months.

However, given the circumstances, it is still a smart move.

Wood thrives in the air, so he should get on the end of Kieran Trippier’s excellent deliveries more often than not.

Additionally, poaching him from Burnley severely weakens one of Newcastle’s direct relegation rivals.

According to the Daily Mail, the Clarets are said to be furious about the situation.

Only time will tell if it pays off for Newcastle, but that final day meeting between the Magpies and Burnley has just become that bit more interesting.
