A West Ham United fan has summed up the mood among the club’s supporters with a hilarious line on a radio phone-in.
A woeful start to life at their new Olympic Stadium home had morale on the pitch and in the stands at a new low.
Fighting amongst fans and safety fears at the ground as well as a perceived lack of the famous intimidating Hammers atmosphere from Upton Park has seen the stadium switch cited by many as a reason for the club’s contrast in fortunes compared to their fantastic campaign last term.
Seven points in as many days has lifted spirits somewhat and pushed Slaven Bilic‘s side up to the relative comfort of 13th place in the Premier League table.
Many supporters still aren’t happy, though, given the poor level of performance in back-to-back 1-0 home wins over Burnley and Hull City and the general matchday experience at the 57,000-seater venue.
West Ham United’s Adrian, Dimitri Payet and team mates look dejected
The stadium issues have driven a wedge between factions of supporters and the club’s owners.
And a disastrous summer of inadequate transfer business after supporters were promised a marquee striker signing for over £30 million has not helped either.
Now one supporter has summed up how many fans are feeling this season with a hilarious line during a phone-in on talkSPORT.
West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic speaks with flop Simone Zaza
The Hammers fan told the world’s biggest sports radio station: “We was promised retractable seating and a £50m striker…
“We got scaffolding and (Simone) Zaza.”
The comment will strike a chord with fans who are feeling completely disenchanted with the way this season has panned out.
Flop Zaza, who has struggled to get a shot on target let alone a goal, looks set to have his season-long loan from Juventus cancelled six months early before he activates a £20m obligation to buy after 14 appearances.
And with the January transfer window a notoriously difficult market in which to do business there are no guarantees the club will be able to right the wrongs of the summer either.
