Luis Enrique has raved about Arsenal target and Real Madrid playmaker Marco Asensio, as quoted in MundoDeportivo.
The former Barcelona and Spain head coach has said that Asensio, linked with a move to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the January transfer window, can play the false 9 role to a high level.
Enrique managed Asensio during his time as the Spain boss.
The Spaniard stepped down from his role after Spain’s failure at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Asensio, who can play as an attacking midfielder or as a winger, was part of the Spain squad at the World Cup.
MundoDeportivo have reported this week that last season’s La Liga and UEFA Champions League winners Real Madrid are willing to sell Asensio in the January transfer window.
The 26-year-old is out of contract at Madrid at the end of the season.
And, according to the report, Arsenal are following the situation of the Spain international closely and want to sign him in the middle of the season.

Luis Enrique on Arsenal target Marco Asensio
Enrique said about Spain lacking a proper striker: “We’ve always had this problem in the national team that we don’t have goals. But we had an average of two goals per game.
“I was very happy with the forwards. Morata was spectacular, and Asensio, I see him with a high level to play ‘false’ 9.”
Luis Enrique’s comments on Marco Asensio’s ability to play as a false 9 might be of interest to Arsenal.
The Gunners need to sign a striker due to injury to Gabriel Jesus, and maybe playing Asensio as a false 9 for a while is something that could appeal to manager Mikel Arteta.
