Celtic want to sign John McGinn – but the Hibernian midfielder has been more impressed with a league rival.

John McGinn has stirred the pot ahead of Hibernian’s Scottish League Cup semi-final clash with Celtic at Hampden Park on Saturday.
The midfielder’s assertion that Brendan Rodgers’ defending champions were not the toughest test Hibs have endured this season will certainly raise a few eyebrows.
Yet, after scoring two stunning goals against Celtic in the 2-2 draw prior to the international break, McGinn is well placed to judge. Especially with Hibs failing to break down a disciplined Aberdeen side during their 1-0 home defeat at the weekend.

“It was probably as hard a test as we’ve had all season,” the 22-year-old told The Scotsman following the defeat to Aberdeen, secured by a winner from former Celtic attacker Gary Mackay-Steven. “And we went to Ibrox and Celtic Park.
“Celtic would tell you they were a bit tired against us the other week after Anderlecht, but Aberdeen are so strong in so many departments – even their bench.”

With nine games played in the Scottish Premiership season, Celtic and Aberdeen are level on points at the top of the table. Derek McInnes’ Dons have finished as runners-up in each of the last three seasons and the early signs are that they could pose an even more difficult test for a Celtic side that want to progress in Europe too in 2017/18.
Though McGinn, who has been linked with a move to Celtic for the last few months via the Daily Record, will be hoping his comments don’t come back to bite him at Hampden Park.
