Hibernian manager Neil Lennon has told The Scotsman that Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn should be an inspiration to his players.

Lennon made the comments about McGinn following the Scotland international midfielder’s superb goal for Villa against Sheffield Wednesday in their Championship match at Villa Park this past weekend.

The former Celtic manager worked with the 23-year-old at Hibernian before the midfielder left for Villa in the summer transfer window.

Lennon told The Scotsman: “I’m delighted for John, really pleased. But he has gone now. We are grateful for his time here, we are very proud and I hope he goes on to do great things in his career.

“That’s just a little cameo of what he can do and what he can achieve. He should be a really great inspiration for players here at Hibs, whether it be young players or players in the team. This is a place where you can come and prosper and go on.”

Aston Villa success

McGinn joined Villa from Scottish Premiership side Hibernian in the summer transfer window for a fee reported by The Lancashire Telegraph to be worth £4 million.

The 23-year-old has scored one goal and provided two assists in eight Championship appearances for Villa so far this season, according to WhoScored.

The midfielder showed his quality during his time at St. Mirren and Hibernian, and Villa were smart to sign the Scotland international in the summer transfer window.

McGinn has made a good start to his career at Villa, and the Villa Park faithful should be looking forward to more heroics from the midfielder in the coming months.
