‘He’s very subtle’: Glenn Hoddle says one Aston Villa ace is ‘going to get better and better’

Speaking on his podcast, Glenn Hoddle has lavished praise upon Ollie Watkins after he received his first ever England call-up.

The striker has been in red-hot form this season, netting 10 goals in the Premier League, including a hat-trick against Liverpool, and Hoddle is happy to see him getting an international nod.

Hoddle says that he’s only going to get better after what has been a strong debut season in the top-flight.

“Watkins is in there. Again, he deserves it. He’s played consistently well and he’s hit the Premier League by storm. He really has. It’s tough to play up there on your own, you know,  he’s not 6 ft 4, he’s not full of muscle, he’s very subtle in the way he plays and he’s going to get better and better,” Hoddle said.

You can’t really argue with anything Hoddle has said here.

Playing as a lone number nine is one of the toughest roles in football, especially when you’re not a muscle-bound giant, but Watkins’ work-rate, special awareness and ability to link-up play makes him a perfect striker for Villa.

Watkins may be something of a late bloomer, not making his Premier League debut until the age of 24, but during his ascension through the EFL, he’s shown time and again that he’s able to step up another gear.

He’s gone from being one of League Two’s best to being one of the Championship’s best to being one of the Premier League’s best, and now, he has the chance to prove he’s one of England’s best.
