Speaking on the Pitch Side Podcast, Virgil van Dijk has been speaking about who the hardest trainers are at Liverpool.

For anyone who knows anything about Liverpool, van Dijk’s response when asked who the hardest trainer at the club is won’t be too much of a surprise.

Indeed, the Dutchman named James Milner as the player who spends the most time at Kirkby amongst the entire squad.

Van Dijk stated that the Englishman is always in and around the training ground, claiming that he’s a very important member of the squad who always sets a good example to the younger members of the team.

Milner the hardest worker

Van Dijk discussed Milner and his attitude.

“Who is the first one in and the last one out at training,” van Dijk was asked.

“I would say James Milner and myself. We are early all the time to get treatment and to make sure we are ready for training. I wouldn’t say I am the last one out though. James Milner is the one that is always there. You need that, you need that character around you and he’s setting the right example. He’s very important for the football club and for the young guys, so he’s good,” van Dijk said.

Perfect role model

Milner may not be one of Liverpool’s best players these days, but make no mistake about it, the veteran midfielder is one of the Reds’ most important figures behind the scenes.

You don’t have a 20-year Premier League career if you don’t have an elite mentality, and if he can pass that mindset onto just one or two of Liverpool’s young players, the club will benefit in the long-term.

Milner is exactly the sort of player you want to have around the training ground.
