Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard would be better off joining Leicester City than Sheffield United in the January window, former England ace Trevor Sinclair told talkSPORT (23 December, 12.45pm).

Chris Wilder knows full well that the Blades will need to pull of a Houdini-esque act if they are to escape the relegation zone after making the worst start of any team to a single Premier League season.

With that in mind, the winter window feels like an ideal opportunity for Sheffield United to reinforce a struggling squad.

Examiner Live claims that Wilder has held talks with Manchester United about a potential loan deal for Lingard, although the 28-year-old’s £75,000-a-week wages represent a sizeable stumbling block.

According to Sinclair, however, there is a club flying high at the other end of the table who may be better suited to coax those match-winning displays out of a mercurial talent who, just two years ago, was one of England’s key players at the World Cup.

“There’s a club where I feel he would suit the manager’s ethos,” Sinclair said when asked about reported interest from Sheffield United and Brighton in Lingard.

“Leicester City; I think he could fit into Brendan Rodgers’ style of play, getting in between the lines, he’s got great energy and, technically, he’s very good.

“He could be very useful for Leicester. He’s still a young man with a lot left to give, if he’s got that hunger to go and prove himself.”

Whether Manchester United would be willing to let Lingard join a potential top-four rival is another matter, of course.

The Carrington graduate has not played a minute of Premier League football in 2020/21, his only opportunities coming in the EFL Cup.
