Speaking on the Sky Sports Football YouTube channel, Patrick Bamford has been waxing-lyrical about Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

The Frenchman has enjoyed a breakout debut season in the Premier League, and it’s hard to believe he’s just 21 years old when you watch him.

The glovesman has been one of the standout performers in Leeds’ squad, and Bamford believes he can just keep getting better and better.

“I think he can go to the top. I think if you look at the French keepers, after Lloris there’s not many who are doing what he’s doing at the level he’s doing it at. He’s still young and if you know him he’s quite a funny, goofy and jokey kind of kid, but he’s very good and he knows how good he is as well. He’s always working to improve, so he can definitely get to the top and stay there for a good while,” Bamford said.

To be fair, Bamford may not be wrong.

Meslier has been mightily impressive in his debut Premier League campaign, and there’s no reason why he can’t keep getting better.

He’s only 21 years old, and goalkeepers usually don’t peak until their early 30s, so we could yet see another decade of development in Meslier.

Leeds United will have a real player on their hands if he continues to progress in this way.

Fingers crossed Bamford is right.
