‘He’s unbelievable’: Ian Rush names the player he would love Liverpool to sign

Ian Rush says Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is a class act but Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero is the only Premier League player he would take over Liverpool’s star-studded front three, while speaking to talkSPORT (11 September, 12.50pm).

One of the most feared goal-scorers in English football history might have to make room for 32 candles on his birthday cake these days but, even as he enters the autumn of his career, the goals continue to flow like vintage vino.

Aguero took his tally to 180 in 263 Premier League appearances despite an injury hit 2019/20.

City’s lethal number ten is all-but guaranteed to overhaul Andy Cole and become the third-highest goal-scorer in the competition’s history at some point next season.

And Rush, a ruthless penalty box poacher in his own day, would jump at the chance to bring Aguero to Anfield, choosing the former Atletico Madrid star over the likes of Raul Jimenez, Harry Kane and Arsenal talisman Aubameyang.

“It would be none of them, it would be Aguero! For me, he is an unbelievable player,” said Rush, the most prolific striker in Liverpool’s history.

“I like watching him inside the penalty box, he is a penalty box sort of player. Aubameyang is class but…”

The fact that Rush would turn his nose up at the likes of Kane, Jimenez and more speaks volumes about the quality at Jurgen Klopp’s disposal right now.

Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah scribed their name into Liverpool’s already rich history during the club’s first ever Premier League triumph, although there is a nagging feeling that Klopp could do with a classic ‘number nine’ to ease the burden on the overburdened trio.
