Speaking on Open Goal, Charlie Mulgrew has been waxing-lyrical about Scott Brown, claiming that he could have played in the Premier League.

The midfielder is of course coming towards the end of his playing career, so any idea of him playing in England’s top-flight has come and gone, but Mulgrew believes that in his pomp he was good enough to play at the top level.

“I can’t speak highly enough of him to be honest. To stay at Celtic for that amount of time under scrutiny in the fishbowl at Glasgow, I know he lives out Edinburgh way, but fair play, he’s unbelievable and the stuff he’s done has been frightening,” Mulgrew said.

The defender was then asked if he believes Brown could have been a top player in England, to which he replied:

“You always had debated down south about how it would be and the different standard, but I have no doubt about it, Browny could have played in the Premier League, he was the fittest player I played with, naturally fit, aye, a top player.”

It’s certainly an interesting thought.

The idea of Brown playing in the Premier League will certainly go down as one of Scottish football’s great ‘what if’s’.

In our view, Brown could have done a job for a number of Premier League sides in his pomp, and to be honest, a prime Brown would really suit the modern game due to just how fit he was.
