Former Liverpool defender and current Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has given his thoughts on Arsenal’s impending signing of Jorginho from Chelsea.

The Gunners have agreed to sign the Italian from Chelsea, and the move for the midfielder has been the talk of the town on deadline day.

Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports News (12:10PM), was inevitably asked about this move, and he was optimistic about how Jorginho would get on at Arsenal.

Carragher noted that some have argued that Jorginho’s style is not a good fit for Arsenal’s fast-paced and energetic approach, but he sees it differently. He believes that the experience and cool head that Jorginho brings will be important for the Gunners as they approach the final stretch of the season with a title triumph in sight.

Carragher backs Jorginho for success

The pundit gave his reaction to this move.

“Jorginho is an interesting one and I can totally understand it. I was listening to people talking about it today saying that he’s not the style of Arsenal because they’re so fast and energetic and he’s the opposite of that,” Carragher said.

“I get that argument, but I also think that with 10 games to go of the season they will need cool heads. When there’s a pressure moment, the nerves are coming on in the title run in he may actually be a really good signing in terms of slowing things down, cooling heads, he’s won a Champions League and a Euros, he’s a top player. I’m not saying he’s for Arsenal week-in, week-out forever, but he could be a big help for them towards the end of the season because they’re quite nervous.”

Carragher points out that Jorginho has won a Champions League and a Euros, which is arguably the most important factor of this signing.

Arsenal don’t have many players who have won the biggest trophies in the game, and they need cool heads in the dressing room as they enter the final stretch of a title race.

Jorginho will be exactly that. He’s been there and done it all before, and that experience will be huge in terms of helping the younger players at the Emirates.

Carragher is careful to note that Jorginho is not a long-term solution for Arsenal, but in the short term, he may prove to be a valuable asset in the club’s push for a title. With his vast experience and success at the top level, the Italian could be vital over the next few months.
