Paul Merson has claimed that Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier would ‘run through a brick wall’, as he told Sky Sports News (12/02/22 at 1:00 pm).

The former double-winner added that Trippier was the best signing out of everyone Newcastle brought in during the January transfer window.

The England right-back scored a wonderful free-kick in midweek, as the Magpies beat Everton 3-1.

It was a crucial point during the game because, at 2-1, the Magpies have been there before where they have let the lead slip, but that’s when Trippier stepped up.

And Merson lauded the man purchased from Atletico Madrid and the quality in his boots.

“He has got that in his locker,” said Merson. “We have seen that with England.

“Great goal and that’s why they bought him. That’s a big goal. Burnley are now four points behind.

“Trippier was a good signing. Out of all the signings, he was the one. It’s safe, he will run through a brick wall and he has got a great free-kick and he puts the ball on a sixpence.

“For me, he ticks all the boxes. Fair play to him.”

Newcastle haven’t been here often, but they can win three Premier League games from three on Sunday afternoon.

Steven Gerrard’s free-scoring Aston Villa will travel to St James’ Park looking to win their first encounter in the north east in 17 years.

It seems as though Trippier will be touch and go for the game after picking up a knock during the Everton win.

One fullback will already be missing for that match and that’s Matt Targett, who was outstanding on his debut, but he can’t play against his parent club.
