Tim Sherwood spoke in awe to Premier League Production about Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and how he is ‘the key’ to Jose Mourinho’s system following Tottenham’s win in the North London derby last night.

Tottenham put two goals past their rivals and secured another clean sheet, as Sherwood claimed that a player like Hojbjerg is making his job in the middle of the park look ‘so easy’.

In the summer, a few eyebrows were raised when Spurs opted to sign the combative midfielder from Southampton because he wasn’t the star midfield player that they were looking for.

But it’s fair to say that he has shut his critics up big time and Sherwood was waxing-lyrical about the player after his performance in the North London derby.

“Hojbjerg was key,” said Sherwood. “He has been key for Jose this season. He is the man. He is the glue. He’s the protection.

“He makes the job so easy. He’s not being told. When Tony [Adams] used to play there, he used to pull in and say ‘Patrick [Vieira], come here’. That boy wants to do that job.

“He knows instinctively why I have come to Tottenham. Jose has explained to him ‘I want you to do this job’. He has found a way now, Jose. We are not Pochettino’s side. We are not going to be on the front foot. I don’t need to use Hojbjerg as a midfield player to go box-to-box. I don’t need Harry Kane to have 50 touches in the opposition penalty. I need to win matches.”

Against Manchester United, Manchester City and now Arsenal, Hojbjerg has perhaps been Tottenham’s best player during each of those matches.

Whilst Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son have been dominant in the attacking third. He has been dominant in the defensive third.

The only difference is that he hasn’t got the numbers like the attackers do, which showcases the top-quality job he is doing so far.
