Speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, former England women’s international Farrah Williams has been speaking about West Ham and Declan Rice.
To put it bluntly, Rice has been sensational this season. The midfielder has ran almost every game he’s played and he was at it again this weekend against Liverpool.
The 22-year-old has cemented his place as one of the best players in the Premier League right now, and Williams has even gone as far as to say that he’s the best player in the league when it comes to protecting his backline.
What’s been said?
The BBC pundit had nothing but good things to say about Rice.
“Declan Rice since the Euros he’s really stepped up his game for West Ham,” Williams said.
“I think he’s very good. There’s so much more to come from him, I think he’s an old-school midfielder who is very good at protecting his backline. I think he’s the best at doing that in the Premier League. That’s a big statement, but I believe he’s the best at that.”
Hard to argue
Based on his start to this season, can we really argue against this statement?
Yes, there are players like N’golo Kante, Rodri and Fabinho plying their trade in the league, but can you honestly say that they’re better than Rice right now?
Of course, there are arguments to be made, but it’s hard to discredit Williams’ statement here.
Factor in that Rice is slowly but surely becoming more of an attacking force and you have to say that West Ham have one hell of a player on their hands.
