Speaking on the It’s a Funny Old Life Podcast, Jamie Carragher has tipped Ibrahima Konate to become Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice centre-half next season.

The Frenchman has enjoyed a very successful debut campaign at Anfield – thus far, he hasn’t lost a single game he’s played for the Reds, but he’s found minutes hard to come by due to the form of Joel Matip.

However, at the age of just 22, time is on Konate’s side, and according to Carragher, he will be promoted to first-choice next season after a fine run of form.

What’s been said?

Carragher spoke about Konate.

“He’s great isn’t he?” Carragher said about Konate.

“Last night watching him, oh god. The three we have at the moment because Joe Gomez has been struggling to get back in and he’s been playing at right-back a little bit, but the three now. I think Konate next season he might become first choice. I think he’ll just edge Matip, not that Matip has done anything wrong, I just think he’s that good and that young that you just have to let him play,” Carragher said.

Great dilemma

Whether or not Klopp opts to choose Matip or Konate more often next season remains to be seen, but the fact of the matter is that this is a great dilemma to have.

Think back to last season, the Reds would have killed to have one quality centre-half fit and available, now, most weeks, they have four.

Matip has been absolutely incredible this season, and the fact that it’s not unreasonable to imagine that he could lose his spot next season is a real testament to Konate’s talent and Liverpool’s recruitment policy.

The future is certainly bright for the Reds at centre-half.
