Glenn Hoddle says Tottenham Hotspur should have signed James Maddison ‘three years ago’ and how the summer signing and Harry Kane were ‘made for each other’.

The Tottenham legend added that James Maddison’s move to Spurs is going to be ‘the start of his England career’ and how his International teammates ‘don’t see pictures he does’.

During the January transfer window of 2020, Spurs parted ways with Christian Eriksen, who at the time, joined Inter, that’s when Hoddle thinks Maddison should have entered the building, as he told Premier League Productions (13/08/23 at 1:15 pm).

Instead, a lot of money was splashed on the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, and even Rodrigo Bentancur, who has done well.

But most of the players have struggled, hence why the team just continued to decline, and as of last season, missed out on European football.

Whilst Hoddle is delighted with the arrival of Maddison, he did express frustration at how late the deal was done.

“When Maddison come to the club, I think they should have got him three years ago,” said Hoddle. “I think he is that good in a better team.

“I think him and Kane are made for each other. Harry doesn’t have to drop if he is playing in that Tottenham team by doing a ten and a nine job.

“Kane had somebody now, the last time he had Eriksen, since then, he’s had nobody that could put a ball on a plate for him. Then Maddison comes in and I am getting excited by that. But I think the manager always knew that there was a chance Harry was going to move on.

“He sees pictures that others don’t see – I think we will see the best of this lad at Tottenham. I think he will push people in the England side. He has got more goals in him, this could be the start of his England career. I see him doing things at Leicester and I think ‘my word, I don’t see other players in the England team doing that’. They don’t see pictures that he does. He is a very, very good midfield player.”

Maddison will thrive at Spurs

On his Premier League debut for Spurs, he supplied two assists and looked at home under this new Ange Postecoglou system.

From having three defensive-minded managers in the dugout, the fans are now going to be treated to attacking and possession-based football.

Maddison is going to thrive and absolutely cook under this system, as he is already a fan favourite.
