Speaking on the Premier League’s YouTube channel, Alan Shearer has, perhaps surprisingly, had quite a lot of praise for Emerson Royal.

The Brazilian has had a torrid start to life in the Premier League, he’s already lost his place in the starting XI to Matt Doherty, and he looks completely out of his depth at times.

However, while many have been unimpressed with Emerson, Shearer has seen glimpses that have led him to believe he has plenty of room to grow.

What’s been said?

Shearer had good things to say about Emerson.

“Next a newcomer to the Premier League, Emerson Royal. There was a lot of excitement about his arrival amongst Spurs fans, and while I don’t think the young man has quite met expectations, he’s still offered his side a fair bit,” Shearer said.

“Tall and imposing, Royal is decent in the air and has a habit of getting in the way when the opposition has the ball out wide. Going forward he has also shown promise, creating at least one chance per 90 minutes, putting him in the top 10 for full-backs in the league.

“He’s shown a few moments that have led me to believe he has room to grow as well.”

“Expectations for Emerson Royal were very high at the start of the season, and while he’s not met them yet, I think he could still be a hit for Spurs.”

Has to improve

Shearer says that Emerson has room to grow, and he needs to grow quickly.

We hate to pile-in on a player, but the right-back has been utterly dreadful at times this season, and his bright moments have been few and far between.

However, if Shearer sees something in him, who are we to disagree with the Premier League’s all-time top scorer?

Emerson hasn’t shown much so far, but if Shearer thinks there’s a gem to be polished, we’re willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Fingers crossed the full-back can kick on from here.
