Tim Sherwood slammed Rodrigo Bentancur for his defending before Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning opener during Tottenham’s 3-2 defeat at Manchester United on Saturday, as he told Premier League Productions (12/03/22 at 6:25 pm).

The former Spurs boss claimed that Bentancur ‘scared Fred into doing something good’ because of his ‘poor’ positional play.

It was Fred’s flick around the corner that fell into the path of Ronaldo, who unleashed a rocket into Tottenham’s net to start proceedings for his first hat-trick since returning to Old Trafford.

Antonio Conte’s side did all they could do hit back, but they just couldn’t stop picking the ball up from their own net.

Nonetheless, this is what Sherwood made of Bentancur’s defending during Tottenham’s defeat yesterday.

“Bentancur makes a poor decision, he should stay where he is,” said Sherwood.

“You have got one of the best players there, who has ever played the game, in behind you.

“And he has scared Fred into doing something good. He sees him on the shoulder, just flicks it on the outside to Ronaldo and what a strike.”

At least Tottenham are consistent because, judging by the form book, they should beat Brighton in midweek, before losing to West Ham next week.

To put it simply, this is where Spurs can do something about it and go on a strong run heading into the last strech of the Premier League season.

As the games fade away, so do Tottenham’s chances of securing a top-four finish.

But they still play West Ham and the north London derby is due to be rescheduled, so they aren’t out of it yet.
