Ajax ace Mathijs de Ligt has praised former teammate Davinson Sanchez, describing him as ‘ruthless’.

Sanchez completed a record transfer to Spurs in August and made his first start for the club against Everton at the weekend.

The Colombian international put in a composed performance, and De Ligt is missing his former defensive partner and says he learned from his no nonsense approach.

De Ligt was quoted by Ajax Showtime: “Davinson is defensively ruthless.

“I myself was someone who wanted to solve everything in a football way, just pick someone out in your own penalty area. I’m trying to avoid this now.

“Sometimes you cannot solve with football and need to kick it into the stands. Davinson understood this perfectly.”

Ajax were determined not to lose Sanchez in the transfer window but ended up cashing in for £42 million after the defender made clear his intention to move on.

It was a big call from Mauricio Pochettino to pick Sanchez to start at Goodison Park but he did not let his head coach down.

Tottenham had the best defence in the Premier League last season and the addition of the South American has made them even stronger.

De Ligt himself was last week rumoured to be a top target for Barcelona, who had switched their attention to him after spotting his talent while scouring Sanchez, Mundo Deportivo reported.
