Alan McInally has praised youngster Bobby Clark for ‘standing out’ during Liverpool’s EFL Cup win over Derby County on Wednesday night at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp made several changes to his XI, including a number of new faces starting, from 17-year-old Bobby Clark making his first start and summer signing, Calvin Ramsay, also earning his first 90 minutes of football.

Given the number of young players playing, the tie went to penalties after a goalless draw, with Caoimhin Kelleher producing yet again in between the sticks as the Reds progressed to the next round.

It’s been a tough old season already for those in Liverpool colours, but ahead of the break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, things are starting to swing towards a positive direction.

That was helped yesterday by a number of young guns impressing the Anfield crowd, as McInally was full of praise for Bobby Clark, especially his ability on the ball, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports.

“The young boy Bobby Clark has done really well,” said McInally. “He’s really good on the ball actually. He’s only in the youth team.

“But what an opportunity for him and he’s taking it because he’s standing out so far in the middle of the park for Liverpool.”

CAN LIVERPOOL DEFEND THEIR CROWN?

There were a number of big hitters who headed for the EFL Cup exit door yesterday, mainly thanks to a number of all-Premier League ties being played.

It was an evening to forget for those in the capital, with Arsenal losing to Brighton, Antonio Conte’s side getting outclassed by Nottingham Forest and Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers edging out West Ham on penalties.

Added to that, Eddie Howe’s highly-flying Newcastle United won their penalty shootout win over Crystal Palace and Chelsea lost at Manchester City.

That probably opens a door for a surprise team to go deep into this competition because a fair few of the big boys are already out of it.
