Speaking on the ESPN FC Podcast, Erling Haaland has been full of praise for Virgil van Dijk, naming the Dutchman as the best defender he’s come up against.
Haaland has had the misfortune of playing against van Dijk on a couple of occasions in the Champions League, and it’s fair to say the Norwegian found it tough.
Indeed, the Dortmund star says that he didn’t win a single duel against van Dijk.
What’s Haaland said about van Dijk?
The striker named the Liverpool man as the best defender he’s faced.
“Good question. I’ve played against a lot of good defenders, and it also matters how the team is playing, but van Dijk, as I’ve said before, he’s really good. How tall he is, how strong he is and how fast he is and also his timing is crazy, I don’t think I won one duel against him because he’s a physical monster,” Haaland said.

How good is Haaland?
Haaland is clearly in awe of van Dijk, but this comment just goes to show how good the Norwegian actually is.
Haaland says that van Dijk is the toughest defender he has ever faced, but he’s still managed to score twice in the three games he’s played in against the Dutchman for both club and country.
Just imagine having that sort of record against what you perceive to be your toughest opponent. It’s absolutely insane.
Haaland is, of course, used to scoring in every single game against every single team, and while van Dijk has been able to slow him down in the past, he’s not been able to stop him.
