Ian Wright has told Matchday Live that Eddie Nketiah needs to ‘keep the pressure’ on his Arsenal teammate Alexandre Lacazette after his winning goal yesterday.

Both players found the back of the net at the Emirates Stadium as Mikel Arteta’s men dragged themselves over the line to secure a 2-1 win over West Ham.

Lacazette, who also netted on the opening weekend win against Fulham, started the encounter and opened the scoring before Nketiah came off the bench to seal all three points late on.

Wright shared that he’s regularly in contact with Nketiah, but he now believes the young striker is ‘on the road’ and he doesn’t need to be giving him advice.

On whether he’ll be calling Eddie: “We kind of always text or something just to keep him going,” Wright told Matchday Live. “But he’s on the road now and I don’t need to be in his ear anymore.

“Every now and again I would probably get a text saying ‘yes, nice one, uncle’, but I am just pleased for him.

“Simply because he has to do that [score goals] to keep the pressure on Lacazette, so if it’s not happening for Laca then he can get his chance and do that.”

Arsenal’s record transfer deals

  1. Nicolas Pepe

    £72 million

  2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

    £56 million

  3. Alexandre Lacazette

    £52 million

  4. Thomas Partey

    45 million

  5. Mesut Ozil

    £42 million

Nketiah has grown under Arteta’s stewardship and he was provided with regular game time during the restart by his manager.

Arsenal have a number of attacking options to choose from to play up top and Nketiah’s goal yesterday only adds to the composition.

All of this bodes well for Arteta because if that type of competitive nature and mindset can run through the club then Arsenal will fly up the table.
