Jermain Defoe says Son Heung-min is ‘on fire’ for Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Over the weekend, the 31-year-old netted his sixth Premier League goal of the campaign as Tottenham recorded a controversial 2-1 win over nine-man Liverpool.

In comparison to last season, when Son Heung-min netted ten Premier League goals, he is fairing far better under this new-look Spurs side.

During his playing days, Defoe certainly knew where the back of the net was and he is backing the South Korean star to ‘score 25 goals’ this season, as he told Premier League Productions (30/09/23 at 7:35 pm).

Given the attack-minded nature of this Tottenham side, then you would certainly back Son to hit those numbers because it also wasn’t so long ago when he won the Premier League’s Golden Boot.

Not only that, someone needs to take responsibility after Harry Kane’s exit, and as Defoe touched upon, the pressure of the club’s record goalscorer leaving hasn’t been felt yet.

Son to score 25 Premier League goals?

“Sonny has been on fire this season,” said Defoe. “I wouldn’t even call it pressure. But Harry’s gone and he is someone who can score 25 goals.”

Son perfect for Postecoglou’s system

It needs to be noted that Son, who was signed by Mauricio Pochettino, scored goals under Jose Mourinho and won the Golden Boot under Conte, so it’s not like he went missing for a few years.

But last season, he just wasn’t himself and there wasn’t a player in that Tottenham dressing room who suits Postecoglou’s system down to a tee than Son himself.

And now he can dart around inside that penalty box like the red arrows, press as high up as possible and finish off the non-stop service he is getting from the likes of James Maddison, Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski.
