Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been speaking about Tottenham and Sergio Reguilon.

Reguilon had a torrid time in the north London derby at the weekend. Bukayo Saka consistently got the better of him and there was very little the Spaniard could do about it.

Wright noted that Reguilon had a poor game, and he thinks that the left-back has regressed since he joined the north London club last summer.

What’s been said?

Wright says that he rated Reguilon quite highly when he first arrived in the Premier League, but now, he thinks he’s gotten worse.

“When Reguilon came, I looked at him and thought ‘Jesus Christ Real Madrid have got some players’, but now I watch him and he’s nowhere near what he was and he didn’t have a clue what to do with Saka. Saka could go anywhere. He didn’t know whether to go inside on his strong foot or if he’d go outside like he did to set up the goal,” Wright said.

Losing confidence

Sergio Reguilon looked like an absolute revelation before he arrived at Tottenham.

During his loan spell with Sevilla, he looked like one of the most exciting and electric attacking full-backs in Europe, but now, he looks a shell of his former self.

He no longer goes forward with the same level of drive, and as Wright says, he’s indecisive when he’s in defence.

So, what’s the problem? Well, like many footballers, Reguilon’s regression may stem from a confidence issue.

The Spaniard still has the physical attributes to be a star. After all, he’s one of the fastest players at Tottenham, but he doesn’t seem to have the confidence to express himself going forward.

Fingers crossed Spurs can find a way to get the left-back playing his best football once again.
