Chris Sutton has revealed that he’s pleased with Celtic’s deal to sign Diego Laxalt, claiming that Greg Taylor isn’t a long-term solution for their left-back issue.
The Hoops haven’t really replaced Kieran Tierney, if we’re honest.
Celtic signed Boli Bolingoli and the former Kilmarnock defender in the summer of 2019 following Tierney’s move to Arsenal, but the former has been loaned out after a disastrous first year in Glasgow for a number of reasons, while Taylor is Neil Lennon’s first-choice option this time around.
But with 24 caps for Uruguay under his belt, Laxalt, who signed for the Parkhead club on Monday, will most likely bench Taylor once again.
And Sutton has said that the Scot – a £2.2 million addition last summer [The Daily Mail] – just isn’t the ‘answer’ for Celtic or Lennon.
He told The Record’s podcast: “Celtic certainly needed to do something down the left-hand side. We have been crying out for weeks. I feel for Greg Taylor but he’s not the answer. If Laxalt hits the ground running, then that will be a really good piece of business.”
Taylor has managed 12 games for Celtic across all competitions this season.
But Sutton is right in saying that the South American will most probably consign him to the bench for the long term.
The 27-year-old has that bit more pedigree and experience than the Scot and it’ll be fascinating to see how he fares.
