Danny Murphy has told Drive on talkSPORT (12/11/20 at 4:40 pm) that Liverpool should ‘seriously consider’ playing Jordan Henderson at centre-back.

Liverpool fans would have been wondering why it is going against them this season when the news was coming through about Joe Gomez’s injury on Wednesday.

It is a body blow for the champions of England and it now means that their first-choice centre-back duo – Gomez and Virgil van Dijk may not play again during this campaign.

Following the news about Gomez’s injury, Murphy shared his thoughts on who he would play at the back, as he suggested Liverpool’s £20 million [BBC Sport] combative midfielder.

“I actually think, although they have a couple of young lads there who we have seen do alright when they have come in, I also think Henderson can play there,” said Murphy.

“I really do! I think he would be really comfortable there because he’s a physical presence, quick, he’s not stupid and erratic with his tackling.

“He is not someone in midfield who goes around getting silly red cards or putting himself on the line. He is controlled and he’s a leader. And he’s disciplined enough to play there. I would seriously consider playing Henderson there. Depending on the opposition and depending on how big the game was.”

The options that remain for Klopp now are Joel Matip, who is his only senior centre-back at the club, and academy duo Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips – Fabinho has also played at the heart of the club’s defence this season.

The positive thing about the two youngsters is that Klopp has been playing them in the Premier League and the Champions League, respectively, in recent weeks and both have impressed.

So, they will be needed that bit more now, and at least from Liverpool’s perspective, those two aren’t coming in from the cold and have been warming up because the pressure on them has just gone up a notch because of Gomez’s injury.
