Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has told Football London that Reiss Nelson hasn’t played recently as he hasn’t been fully fit.

Nelson has been left out of Arsenal’s squads, sparking concerns that he has fallen down the pecking order again.

But Arteta moved to clarify that the youngster is currently nursing an injury.

“He had a little niggle he’s not been 100%. He’s had a muscular issue,” Arteta said.

“He’s been in and out of training, he’s not been 100%.

“It’s a shame because I felt he was getting into his performance levels, he started to have some really good games and he was starting to build that momentum. This little injury set him back a little bit. But I think he’s been much better.

“He’s not been 100% fit. That’s the reason why he’s been out and he’s not been featuring with the squad.”

When Nelson does return to fitness he may find his chances of playing are increased.

Arteta has turned to his youngsters in recent weeks, and they have repaid his faith.

Emile Smith Rowe has been brought into Arsenal’s starting line-up, and Gabriel Martinelli has also returned from injury.

The Gunners have now won their last two matches in a row, and are finally gathering some momentum after an awful start to the campaign.

Arsenal are next in action on Sunday, when they take on struggling West Bromwich Albion.
